Union County

Union Coun­ty is a coun­ty locat­ed in the U.S. state of Illi­nois. Accord­ing to the 2010 cen­sus, it had a pop­u­la­tion of 17,808. Its coun­ty seat is Jones­boro. It is locat­ed in the south­ern por­tion of Illi­nois known local­ly as “Lit­tle Egypt”. Union Coun­ty was formed out of John­son Coun­ty on Jan­u­ary 2, 1818, the same year Illi­nois became a state. It was named for a joint revival meet­ing of the Bap­tists and Dunkards, called a “union meet­ing”. The coun­ty seal depicts the lead­ers of these two groups shak­ing hands.
