Union County State’s Attorney Tyler R. Edmonds announced today the Union County Grand Jury has returned indictments against Angie V. Lilgegren (DOB 06-24-1954) of 3825 Christian Chapel Road in rural Dongola and Sandra L. Smith (DOB 07-07-1960) of 3550 Christian Chapel Road in rural Dongola in connection with the death of Zane Smith in September 2011. Lilgegren is charged with one (1) count of Drug Induced Homicide, a Class X Felony, and one (1) count of Concealment of a Homicidal Death, a Class 3 Felony. Smith is charged with one (1) count of Drug Induced Homicide, a Class X Felony, and one (1) count of Obstructing Justice, a Class 4 Felony.
Zane Smith was found dead at Lilgegren’s residence on the morning of September 16, 2011. Lilgegren and Smith were indicted by the Union County Grand Jury earlier this month following a year-long investigation by Illinois State Police and the Union County Sheriff’s Office. Lilgegren and Smith are alleged to have provided controlled substances to Zane Smith in the days prior to his death. Lilgegren is also alleged to have moved the victim’s body and delayed in allowing Union County Sheriff’s Deputies access to the room where the body was found. Smith is alleged to have made false statements to investigators regarding delivery of a controlled substance to Zane Smith.
Lilgegren and Smith were taken in to custody on the afternoon of August 20, 2012 by Illinois State Police and Union County Sheriff’s Deputies. Each is being held at the Jackson County Jail in Murphysboro on $150,000 bond and is set for First Appearance on Tuesday, August 21st at 9:00 a.m. at the Union County Courthouse in Jonesboro.
The Union County State’s Attorney’s Office reminds the public that charges are not evidence of guilt. A defendant is presumed innocent and is entitled to a fair trial in which the government has the burden of proving guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
