Mulkeytown Man Sentenced to 50 years for Predatory Criminal Sexual Assault of a Child

Union County State’s Attorney Tyler R. Edmonds announced today that Curtis Edward Carr (DOB 12/10/1980) of Mulkeytown, Illinois has been sentenced to a total of fifty (50) years in the Illinois Department of Corrections on two (2) counts of Predatory Criminal Sexual Assault of a Child, both Class X Felonies.  Carr must serve 85 percent of the sentence and will also serve three (3) years to life of Mandatory Supervised Release (formerly known as Parole).  Carr will also have to register as a sex offender for life.

Carr was found guilty in May 2018 by a Union County jury following an eight (8) day trial.  In July 2013, Carr sexually assaulted a 12 year old girl in a vehicle parked at a residence in rural Jonesboro.  Carr was a friend of the young child’s family.  Evidence presented at trial also showed that Carr later sexually assaulted another young girl in the State of Maryland after developing a relationship with her family.  Carr also engaged in online grooming of another young girl in the State of Ohio.

After the sentencing, State’s Attorney Edmonds said “This sentence means the public will be safe from a serial child predator.  The convictions and sentence were only possible because the survivor of this horrible crime mustered the courage to come forward.  This case should also remind the public that child sex assault is often committed by a person who knows the child and has trust with the child or the child’s family.”

The case was investigated by the Illinois State Police and the victim was interviewed at the Two Rivers Child Advocacy Center in Anna.  The following agencies also assisted in the investigation and prosecution: Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, Franklin County State’s Attorney’s Office, Union County Sheriff’s Office, Amherst (Ohio) Police Department, Lorain County (Ohio) Prosecutor’s Office, Maryland State Police, Franklin-Williamson County Child Advocacy Center, Children’s Medical and Mental Health Resource Network and the Southeast Missouri Network Against Sexual Violence.  State’s Attorney Edmonds added “I also want to again thank the many partner agencies in Southern Illinois and across the nation for their assistance in investigating this case and protecting the public from a child sexual predator.”

The case was prosecuted by State’s Attorney Tyler R. Edmonds and Assistant State’s Attorney Heather Heaslett.
