State’s Attorney Alerts Public Regarding Scam Targeting Union County Residence

Union County State’s Attorney Tyler R. Edmonds is alerting the public regarding an ongoing scam which has been targeting citizens in Union County.  An individual named Justin Cobb claiming affiliation with the “Union County District Attorney’s Office” has placed unsolicited telephone calls to Union County citizens.  The scammer is claiming that the citizen being called owes a specified amount of money for failure to appear for jury duty.  The scammer then asks for the citizen to wire money or obtain a money card and send payment to satisfy the alleged fine.  The Union County State’s Attorney’s Office urges the public to guard against identity theft – do not disclose sensitive financial or identification information over the telephone unless you placed the call or you are sure of the company or individual you are speaking with.  The Union County State’s Attorney’s Office and other Union County offices do not require sensitive information to be provided over the phone.  Similar scams have been reported throughout Illinois and other jurisdictions.

Members of the public with questions or reporting suspicious activity may call the Union County State’s Attorney’s Office at 618–833-7216 or the Union County Sheriff’s Office at 618–833-5500.  Information on protecting your identity is also available from the Federal Trade Commission at www.consumer.ftc.gov and from the Illinois Attorney General at http://www.illinoisattorneygeneral.gov/consumers/hotline.html or 1–866-999‑5630.
