Thebes Man Sen­tenced to Prison for Offer­ing Bribe to Police Officer

Union Coun­ty State’s Attor­ney Tyler R. Edmonds announced today that Michael L. Gold­smith, Jr. (DOB 01/06/1993) of Thebes, Illi­nois has been sen­tenced to five (5) years in the Illi­nois Depart­ment of Cor­rec­tions on one (1) count of Bribery, a Class 2 Felony.  Gold­smith will also serve a two (2) year peri­od of Manda­to­ry Super­vised Release (for­mer­ly known as Parole).  Gold­smith was charged fol­low­ing a May 2015 traf­fic stop by Anna Police.  Upon being advised that he was being placed under arrest for Pos­ses­sion of a Con­trolled Sub­stance, Gold­smith offered cash and a motor­cy­cle to the arrest­ing offi­cer to avoid arrest.  The offi­cer refused and Gold­smith was booked on the addi­tion­al charge of Bribery.  He was sub­se­quent­ly indict­ed on the charge by the Union Coun­ty Grand Jury in June 2015.
